Some days ago I contacted Faythe Levine for sending us Sign Painters. She gave us all informations and we photographed the book. Sign Painters is written by Faythe, artist, photographer and filmmaker based in Milwaukee and Sam Macon, filmmaker, photographer and writer from Chicago. The foreword is from one of the greatest persons in typography Ed Ruscha.

Here is the trailer to the book of the film sign painters and also to get a small insight in what is signpainting and what effort is behind this job.

About the book

There was a time, as recently as the 1980s, when storefronts, murals, banners, barn signs, billboards, and even street signs were all hand-lettered with brush and paint. But, like many skilled trades, the sign industry has been overrun by the techno-fueled promise of quicker and cheaper. The resulting proliferation of computer-designed, die-cut vinyl lettering and inkjet printers has ushered a creeping sameness into our landscape. Fortunately, there is a growing trend to seek out traditional sign painters and a renaissance in the trade. The featured artists are Doc Guthrie, Sean Barton, Stephen Powers, Justin Green, Ira Coyne, Jeff Canham, Mike Meyer and many more. Everyone of them has his own characteristic and meaning of sign painting, but all of them love their job as a part of their lifes.

Ed Fella one of the most interesting persons in typography said:“I have always felt an affinity with sign painters, at first mainly as a source for forms and styles, since we were all using the same twenty-six characters in their infinite variations and constantly needed other inspirations…This book reveils their true genius.”

We highly recommend the book to all who like making typography by hand with a brush or a pen and to all designers who have a open mind for handmade custom scripts.
